Our Story

Us: Bilal and Marius. We were in the same class for the 9th and 10th grades of secondary school - a newly formed class of students who had failed a year and high school graduates. Bilal the first, Marius the second. After graduating, we went in different directions. Bilal went to study in Fulda, Marius went to study in Stuttgart. During his studies, Bilal managed several cafés and that's how he got into coffee. Marius got more and more into coffee after a classic espresso on his vacation in Naples. 12 years later, we met again by chance and the topic of coffee came up. The urge to fulfill our potential took hold of us and there we were: in the process of founding a coffee roasting company that wanted to experience and tell the story of the product's origins.

The Origin Coffee Story

The whole thing is probably largely a journey that we embark on in order to grow personally. But that's a story for another day. What we really want to achieve with OCS is to make the people who have the greatest share in the quality of our product even more tangible and closer - to get to know them. We want to appreciate and celebrate the origins and the people behind it and create the best possible product from it. That's why we travel to each of our coffee producers personally - even before we offer their coffee.

Why the Origin Journey

Quality definitely not, but taste is and remains subjective and we want to live by that. We want to respond to the tastes of our customers and incorporate them into our range. We can only make coffee for you as long as you want to enjoy it. That's why we respond to preferences in our Origin journey and design our range together with our customers.

convey appreciation

With the packaging and postcards from the origin, which we create on our travels from all sorts of motifs, and also the customer portal, we want to celebrate the origin of our coffee. On our social media, we provide a deeper insight into the origin of the coffee and our partnerships with the farms. Travel content, interviews, mini-documentaries, our experiences on site and much more. This reference to origin is of course not only found in the Origin travel subscription, but in the entire shop. More about this here .

Direct trade is fairer than fair trade

In our opinion, there is still a misunderstanding in society about the fairest way to get coffee or other raw materials to us. Fair trade is definitely a start and better than not fair trade, but it only involves a fixed payment to the farmers of twice the world market price for coffee. Unfortunately, this is often far from "fair" and may not be enough for the farms. That is why we trade directly on an equal footing with our partner farms and cooperatives to ensure that they are actually paid fairly and sufficiently for their work. We pay an average of €3.68 per kg more than the fair trade price .

Advance payment as survival security

A big goal we are working towards is to be able to pay for all of our coffees in advance - which we are currently partially able to do. Many farms often struggle to survive because they have to take out loans to finance the production of the crops.

On-site quality control

On our trips to the farms, we get an idea of the work and quality management, among other things. We exchange information with the farms and only add coffees to our portfolio if we agree on working conditions and quality standards. It really is absolutely crazy how much work and love for the file goes into it.

Our Mission

As a coffee roaster, we want to create coffees of unique quality, putting the spotlight on the origin of the product and putting our partners in the foreground - helping to further shape the coffee trade in a positive direction.

Our approach

Experiencing life, culture and work on site, working directly, fairly and on an equal footing with our partner farms, telling their incredible stories and ultimately bringing all these experiences to life in our coffees.

Our contribution

We hope that our way of trading and celebrating coffee will create a connection between our customers and our partner farms and their history. We believe that it is very valuable to know where the products we consume come from and what the story is behind them. If we can create this connection to a certain extent, then for us it is mission accomplished.
